Macakizi: Where the Aegean Sea Meets Indulgence

The road from Bodrum to Macakizi is more than a transfer; it is a seduction. For thirty minutes the Aegean Sea flashes turquoise and silver beside you, a constant reminder of the sea’s pull. By the time you arrive, you already know: water will define your stay.

The entrance is discreet, almost humble—a reception tucked away, as if to hide the resort’s secrets a little longer. Only when you are led through lush, flowering gardens does Macakizi reveal itself. Stone paths meander downhill, pressed in by bougainvillea and jasmine, every turn brings you closer to the sea.

The Heart of Macakizi: Deck and Sea

At the water’s edge, the hotel unfolds its true gem. A vast deck unfurls across the rocks, dotted with oversized sofas, shaded chaises, and private cabanas. Here, every mood finds its setting: champagne with friends, a book in solitude, or a sun-drenched lunch shielded from curious neighbors.

I am not usually one for long days by the water. But at Macakizi, the deck is magnetic and the water impossible to resist.

Rooms: Where Views Matter Most

During our stay we experienced a standard room—comfortable, but modest by Macakizi’s standards. The bathroom design, separated only by glass, left little to the imagination. The suites, by contrast, embody the resort’s promise: sweeping terraces over the sea, expansive bathrooms, and a sense of space that feels in harmony with the property’s spirit. Next time, I will choose the suite without hesitation.

Dining: A Trio of Experiences

Food is Macakizi’s beating heart, and with three restaurants, every meal feels like an event.

Ayla

The newest addition, Ayla, is intimate—seating just 20 to 30 guests—and offers a ten-course tasting menu with a welcome twist: options at every stage. For hotel dining, that flexibility is a gift.

The menu draws from Turkish tradition, elevated with precision. Delicate kofta arrive with sheep’s yoghurt—street food refined to elegance. Manti, those beloved dumplings, reappear in a luxurious rendition filled with smoky eggplant and glazed with silken chicken jus. A beetroot mille-feuille with yoghurt and local caviar bridges Turkish and international flavors, its textures unfolding softly until the caviar bursts against the tongue.

Yet it was the simplest dish that stayed with me: a small bowl of white beans served beside grilled lamb. Cooked with the care Italians devote to pasta, the beans were tender yet al dente, infused with broth and spice. Proof that even the humblest ingredient, treated with respect, can be elevated to luxury.

Macakizi Restaurant

The flagship Macakizi restaurant, holder of a Michelin star for two consecutive years, is the resort’s culinary centerpiece. By day, it hosts the buffet—an experience that deserves its own accolades. By night, it transforms into a fine-dining stage overlooking the Aegean, especially magical at golden hour with a glass of champagne in hand.

The set menu celebrates both indulgence and tradition. Lobster, truffle, and morels share space with lamb, eggplant, and artichoke. Standouts included ravioli with morels in a deeply flavored chicken demi-glace—comforting yet opulent—and lamb so tender it yielded to a spoon, paired with eggplant purée as smooth as silk.

The service, too, elevated the evening. Without a word, our preferences were remembered: still water for me, sparkling for my wife, and our habitual lunchtime drink appeared within minutes. These touches, subtle yet deeply personal, distinguish hospitality from mere service.

The Buffet That Redefined a Cliché

Buffets are rarely celebrated in the world of luxury dining, but Macakizi rewrites the script. Each day brought a changing array of freshly made Turkish specialties—doner, kebab, manti—prepared to order and paired with vibrant salads, hummus, and vegetable dishes. What I expected to be repetitive became a daily highlight, reshaping my idea of what a buffet can be.

Beyond the Table

Macakizi’s allure extends beyond sea and cuisine. The resort houses a small, private movie theatre, seating around 20 guests—a perfect retreat for an evening film or a football match. And one afternoon we slipped away on a three-hour yacht excursion, the Aegean stretching infinitely around us. It was, in a word, unforgettable.

Departure: A Bittersweet Goodbye

On our final morning, climbing back through the narrow garden paths from sea to reception, the moment was bittersweet. Three days had passed in a haze of sea, flavors, and indulgence. Macakizi lingers not only as a place, but as a feeling—one that draws you back before you have even left.
